DPM2012 R2 UR3 - Error 0x80070057 for only one protection group

I currently have about 20 protection groups that backup to tape.  All PGs have backed up to tape successfully in the past.  Since Saturday, one of the PGs fails to backup to tape. The one that fails results in this error:

Error 998: The operation failed because of a protection agent failure.
Error details: The parameter is incorrect (0x80070057)
Recommended action: Retry the operation.

Running "Find /I "0x80070057" *.errlog yields these entries that coincide in time with the console errors:

Other possibly-relevant details:

  • I have tried creating a disk recovery point which succeeds, followed by a tape recovery point, which fails.
  • All of the DPM Server's drives are much less that 50% full.
  • The offending PG is the only one protecting files on a Windows 8.1 -- the rest are all protecting Server 2012 R2 machines.
  • About DPM shows "Microsoft System Center 2012 R2", "Data Protection Manager R2", and "Version: 4.2.1254.0" which I gather from this page includes up to update rollup 3
  • During the last scheduled tape backup, something seems to have gone wrong with the DPM server.  I retried all of the outstanding tape backup jobs and all but the offending PG succeeded.  I also received the "Your PC ran into a problem" screen.  That screen offered to send "C:\windows\minidump\091214-18984091.dmp", "AppData\Local\Temp\WER-94095109-0.sysdata.xml", and "C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP".  I clicked "send details" on that screen.

I have read a number of threads here that refer to the 0x80070057 error, but most apply to earlier versions of DPM 2012 R2.   This thread (see the posts from 2014) seems similar, but it doesn't seem to have been resolved and I can't tell with any certainty that it is actually applicable.

What should I do to fix this error 0x80070057?
