Setting up Shared Library Fails to execute.

I have 3 DPM servers and one Dell ML6000 Tape Library.  Attempting to set up a shared library between them with DPM-2 as the Library server.  I have set up the SQL Server and Server Agent with a domain account.  I have enabled Named Pipes, and verified that Medium Changer devices is not enabled on the client DPM.  The problem is that the client will not execute the Client SQL Server or the Client DPM Server configuration after seemingly successfully configuring the Global SQL config.

On the client:

AddLibraryServerForDpm.exe -DPMServerWithLibrary dpm-2.hcpss.org
Configuration successful.

On the server:

AddLibraryServerForDpm.exe -ShareLibraryWithDpm dpm-3.hcpss.org
Configuration successful.

On the client:

SetSharedDpmDatabase.exe -DatabaseName DPM-2\MSDPM2012\DPMDB

Enter administrator credential for Global SQL Server (DPM-2)
Domain:hcpss
Username:dpmlibsa
Password:*******

(DPM-2) : Global SQL Server configuration Successful.
Failed to execute SharedLibraryConfigureDb.sql on DPM-3\MSDPM2012

I have attempted to remove the Library sharing from both the server and client, and add it back, with the same results.

DPM 2012 - stand alone drive - Short/Long term protection to tape

We are migrating from BE to DPM 2012. I'm trying to configure DPM 2012 for both short term & long term protection - both using tape (stand alone drive). The goal is:

  • Daily backups (Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu) - 2 weeks retention
  • Weekly backup (Friday) - 4 weeks retention
  • Monthly backup (last weekly backup) on every month - 15 m onths retention

I've configured the short term protection for daily and weekly backups. Monthly backups are configured under long term protection. Daily and weekly backups are working as expected. However when it comes time for the Monthly, the DataSet copy jobs are failing. As I understand it, DPM is expecting another drive to copy the weekly backup tape.

How I can achieve above goals ? Backup to disk is not an option.

Tape backups failing

I know there have been many posts about this error, I've tried all of the registry fixes listed in those fixes  (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/dataprotectionmanager/thread/de6b2569-55f1-4027-86bc-0037c8c6a10e), but we still have issues backing up to tape drive.  Our error is:

DPM encountered a critical error while performing an I/O operation on the tape ................... (Barcode - ) in Drive Hewlett Packard LTO Ultrium-3 drive. (ID 30101 Details: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error (0x8007045D))

Tape drive passes all tests running the HP library and tape tools, latest drivers\firmware.  Tried changing SCSI cable too.  Drive is hooked up to a LSI Ultra320 SCSI 2000 series card.  It will sometimes backup 100MB and fail, other times backup 8 GB and fail.  Drive worked fine for months, then all of a sudden we get this error on every backup.  Thanks.

How to reduce the number of alerts?

$

I am a system admin and we recently acquired DPM 2010 and an LTO4 HP drive for about 15 dev servers. We have two protection groups - #1 is file systems and system state, #2 is SQL db's and Exchange sg's. #1 goes to tapes daily, #2 goes to local and tape daily. Things work well, all in all, except for the constant alerts.

It's so bad that I get about 200 emails per day on avg. Most usually come from tape backups. A sampling from today:

Backup of  ########### on ########### cannot be completed. DPM could not find a valid recovery point on disk.

So what can I do to improve this situation or diagnose the real cause? Is there a way to set SLA's on alerts, like what Microsoft offers for Operations Manager users with DPM management pack (http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=7612) except for people who only run DPM without OM?

Thanks!

Hi

I am using DPM 2010 to backup 4 virtual machines stored on a hyper v host. My goals are to have short term storage to disk and have a daily copy to tape to tape that can be taken off site. I am using a stand alone lto 3 tape drive and have have ten tapes available for use.

Can someone please tell me if this is possible to achieve using dpm. I have tried to accomplish this through short/long term goals but so far have been unsucsessfull.

any help appreciated

Thanks

DPM 2012 R2 - PromptingTimeOut for tape

What is the registry key that needs to be changed for DPM 2012 R2?  Is there a maximum length that can be set?

Does this take the same key as DPM 2010?

How to set up a different retention period for a copy tape?

$

Good time of day everyone,

We are backing up to tapes, and would like to have a copy of a backup tape.

Now, DPM has this option for each of the goals (WEEKLY, MONTHLY, YEARLY), witch is nice.

Our question is: How can we set up the copies of backup tapes to have different retention periods?

Example: weekly backup is made, backup to tape is made - expires after 4 weeks,

COPY OF A BACKUP TAPE IS MADE AT THE SAME TIME - EXPIRES IN, let's say A YEAR.

Is it possible with DPM 2012?

Thank you.

tapes offsite ready - marked by reclamation job?

$

Hello

We run a daily tape backup cycle with the aim to remove backup tapes from that night in the morning of the day after. i.e Monday night tapes are removed Tuesday morning offsite. Our backups run from 7pm until the AM hours of the morning and our Tape Co-Location settings are as follows:

Write Period 1 days
Expiry tolerance 0 days

In the morning not all of the tapes used for the nightly backup have been marked as offsite ready and therefore we need to manually lookup through the DPM console which tapes were used and cannot simply refer to a scheduled tape management report.

Is the reclamation job which runs at midnight responsible for marking tapes as offsite ready? if so this would explain the reason why the tapes being used afterwards in the AM hours of the morning are not being marked.

Can this reclamation job be rescheduled to a later time after the backups have completed so that the offsite tapes are reflected in the tape management reports?

Is there anything else I can do to help this i.e set the write period to 0 days?

Thanks

edit: just to add some additional info, DPM 2012 R2 and I am aware that even if the tapes are not marked as offsite ready that they can be removed - but this is not my question. I wish for them to be marked as offsite ready in order for them to be listed in the tape management report without the need to open the DPM console.

DPM 2012 SP1 and Qualstar RLS-8236 Tape Library

Greetings,

I have DPM 2012 SP1 loaded on Server 2012 Standard.  I am trying to get a Qualstar RLS-8236 Changer working with DPM.  The changer contains two IBM Ultrium-TD4 SCSI tape drives.  Both the drives and the changer are listed in Device Manager and Windows reports them both to be working.  The drives are listed under "Tape Drives" and the changer is listed under "Medium Changer Devices."  The Qualstar is SCSI only.  I am using the Microsoft "ltotape.sys" drivers for the IBM Ultrium Tape Drives, since I have read that there are compatibility issues with manufacturer provided drivers with 2012.  I have also checked the HCL and the Qualstar RLS-8236 is listed as a compatible device.

The twist here is, I have DPM installed on an IBM blade, contained in a BladeCenter-H.  The changer is connected to the DPM server via fiber to an Atto 2400 Fiber to SCSI bridge, then via SCSI to the Qualstar changer.  I have checked the zone mapping within the Atto device and that is correct and the Atto sees the drives and changer.  I have re-seated/re-attached all fiber and SCSI connections as well.  I have also cycled the power on both the Atto fiber bridge and the Qualstar changer several times.

Within the DPM Management Console, the Changer library is listed, along with the barcoded tapes.  However, the drives are not listed at all.  When I run DPMLibraryTest.exe /CERTIFY /LL , the changer is listed, along with the IBM Tape Drives:

After completing this command, I returned to the DPM Management Console, performed a rescan/refresh but the drives did not appear.

Should I be manually mapping the Library and the Tape Drives?  If so, I thought that manual mapping was reserved for stand-alone drives?  Is there a specific procedure that I should be following to add these drives to DPM?

Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

DPM error while reading from tape library

Hi,

I have a DPM server which protects some file servers. When i try to recover data which is close to 3 months old from tapes, it gives the following error message:

File copy failed due to an I/O error.
Source location: NO_PARAM
Destination location: NO_PARAM.
(NO_PARAM)
Exception trace :
 NO_PARAM

Please make sure that the source and destination locations exist and have full control permissions for the local system account.

I made sure that my credentials have administrative privileges. I tried to reboot the tape library also, but it still says the same. Please help.

Thanks

Removing offline tape drives and cleaning up DPM config

I am stuck in a bit of a sticky situation where my DPM Server 2010 (running on Server 2008 SP2) has got itself into a muddle with what it thinks are the tape drives and no of drives per library attached to it. The situation is similar to what is described in the post below (and i suspect I need to follow most of the steps therein):

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/dataprotectionmanager/thread/944d0b37-1fc5-4dbc-9fd2-41b9cb3299d0

My issue is DPM keeps reporting the drive isd in use and running dpmdrivemappingtool.exe and rescan does not resolve the issue. I did rename the DPMLA.xml file too before i ran these. The gui ony shows 1 library with 1 drive which is correct but the management shell reports 1 library with 2 drives and a further 2 standalone drives:

I know some of these problems are caused by Windows originally using the Quantam drivers for the driver. I had replaced these with the native windows LTO.sys driver to improve performance. However I had never subsequently experienced the issues that i have suddenly started experiencing where the drive is simply not responding to any commands from DPM. I suspect DPM is picking the wrong device from the database but need some help on how to proceed from here.

I have backed up the DB and  I have already modified all protection groups so they are no longer protected by the tape library. I have not deleted all the protected data though. So how do i proceed next?

Thanks

Autoloader no longer displays Tape Drive

DPM 2010.  Under Libraries I have two libraries configured that both worked fine until about 2 weeks ago.  My second library a Dell PV 122T autoloader lists all 8 slots, but the drive itself is missing.  I have tried restarting services, the physical server, changing SCSI addresses, etc.  The device is listed correctly under Windows 2008 R2 device manger.  I am sure there are some CL strings I can issue to troubleshoot, but have not found what I need yet.  Any help is appreciated!

pdf of config, device manger, xlm files

From what I can see the xml file contains the drive, but DPM is not recognizing it.   I have run HP and Dell Diagnostics and the tape drive works fine.  DPM cannot see the drive.  It just disappeared!   I have spent a month and it's driving me crazy, any ideas would be great.

recommendation for Tape drives/library connected to DPM on virtual machine

Hi,

we are running DPM as a virtual machine in an hyper-v environment. Now we want to add long term storage -> tape. I looked at virtual tape libraries (firestreamer) but as I want to store the "tapes" externally for DR scenario I thought that this might not be the best way to go.

We would prefere to use a "traditional" tape library. The best option I found would be iSCSI tape libraries but the only ones I found started at around 6000 US$. As I will be backing up only up to 1.5 TB/night I don't want to spend that much money. In addition I don't know if they are really going to work.

The other option I saw was to use a SCSI to iSCSI Bridge and connect a SCSI tape library that way. I found solutations for around 3000 US$. Which is still a lot but better then the iSCSI Tape drives.

Does someone else have recommendations or some other ideas what works best? The only entries I found so far were from 2008 and I am quite sure that things have changed since then.

Dataset Copy failed

Last week wednesday the year backup was scheduled. Tapejob went fine but the dataset copy failed with error 24050 telling me to insert the year backup from last year???? Strange. So i tried to figure out wat happened. It looks like the dataset copy job started to soon (15 minutes after de tape backupjob).

Is my conclusion right that when it finds no new year backup as it was underway being taped it asks for the last one available?

Next question is we have a MSL4048 unit with two drives. Do i need to set the protectiongroup to using 2 drives in order to make dataset copy work?

I would rather not do that because in other protectiongroups it would use extra tapes when setting this option

DPM 2010 How to use autoloader tape library

Dear Team

Hello All,

We have implemented the DPM 2010 successfully in our organization. But while creating the protection group it shows the tape library name but not the individual tapes.

So, our requirement is as below.

We want to create the daily backup in one tape. and weekly backup in another tape.

How we can select the specific tape Slot in library for different backup?

An early response will be highly appreciated.

DPM Tape Setup on Standalone

Hello All

I need some help setting up tape backups for DPM 2012 sp1

We are primarily using DPM to backup client laptops and the dpm server (file server)

Our current policy goes like this

Friday  - Week 1 Full Tape (Tape1Wk1Full)
Sat-thurday - 6 Differential tapes  DiffTapeSat, DiffTapeSun...DiffTapeThur

Friday - Week 2 Full tape  (Tape2Wk2Full)
Sat-thurday - 6 Differential tapes  DiffTapeSat, DiffTapeSun...DiffTapeThur

Friday - Week 3 Full tape  (Tape3Wk3Full)
Sat-thurday - 6 Differential tapes  DiffTapeSat, DiffTapeSun...DiffTapeThur

Then starts back from Week1, differntial tapes are reused.

Then 1st of every month is a Monthly Tape (3 month rotation)

Then 1 tape archive year

I understand that DPM doesnt do differential , is that correct ?

Can DPM accomplish this or anything close to this using 1 standalone tape drive?

Thank for any help!

co-location for daily backup

I have created a protection group for file server and taking backup of a share on tape drive.

under protection method--> I chose I want short-term protection using : tape

retention range: 1 week

frequency of backup: daily

backup mode: full and incremental

so full backup on Saturday and other days incremental backup.

I have around 700 GB data size.

I have shortages of tape. from recovery option: I saw in this month on 12thOct, on Saturday it run full backup. It took one tape [say tape 1]

on the next 6 days it run incremental backup on another tape.[say tape 2]

again on Saturday for full backup it took tape 3 [tape 3]

again to run incremental backup it is asking for free tape. and back up failed.

in this way I am wasting space on tape. data size is 700 GB, tape size is around 3 TB.

I can see there is option in 'optimize usage' where I can mention under advanced. write period and expiry tolerance.

i believe I need to modify these settings.  please suggest if i want daily incremental backup and full backup on Saturday with 1 week retention and reuse the same tape or second tape instead of waiting for more tapes
